617 – Steve Gorman (The Black Crowes): No Safety Nets

Steve Gorman was always a drummer, even if he didn’t start playing until he was in college. The longtime drummer for The Black Crowes grew up in a house filled with sports but deep down inside, Steve always wanted to be a drummer. Because Steve had a fascination with music and drumming, his ears matured faster than his ability so when it came to recording or playing gigs, Steve just did what he heard on the records he love: he laid back, served the music and didn’t get in anyone else’s way. This approach has served him well over the years, resulting in him not only recording and touring with The Black Crowes for nearly 20 years, but also working with the Stereophonics Warren Zevon, Bob Dylan Jack Casady, Bo Bice and others. Steve also has his own band, Trigger Hippy, which he formed in 2009.

Steve Gorman talks about:

  • Growing up as the youngest of 8 kids
  • Wanting to play in a band from a young age
  • The advantages and disadvantages that came with starting drums at a late age
  • What makes a drummers sound stand out to him
  • Finding band mates that worked well together
  • Ways the music industry has changed throughout his career
  • The lessons he learned by diving in head first to touring
  • What he’s working on now
