674 – Reuben Spyker: Everything is Connected
We all want to be like our drumming heroes. From learning their licks, playing along with their albums, setting up our kit like theirs or buying the same equipment as them, we think that the closer we can get to mimicking them, the closer we’ll get to catching their lightning in our bottle. No one understands this more than Reuben Spyker, who has spent a good portion of his drumming career doing everything he could to play and sound like his heroes. But what he has learned over that years is the inspiration is everywhere, and, as drummers we need to expand our horizons, learn from all sorts of mediums and use our learnings to infer how we tackle everything, from drumming to drawing, to cooking, to walking down the street to everything in between. From that, we develop our own sound and our own identity as drummers, and humans.
