601 – Pick Withers (Dire Straits) Communication is Key

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and founding drummer for Dire Straits Pick Withers has all the reason in the world to be full of himself. But that’s not Pick’s style. In fact, his lack of ego and appreciation for the greater good is what fueled his career over the past four decades.

Having left Dire Straits in the 80’s, Pick went on to work with a slew of artists such as Bob Dylan, Gerry Rafferty, Joan Baez, Robert Plant, Phil Carmen, The Blues Band (Paul Jones), Dennis LeCorriere, Dave Kelly Band, Gary Fletcher Band and many more.

At this point in his life Pick is continuing to make great music, while educating up and coming drummers, teaching them to develop their own sound and appreciation for the instrument.

Pick Withers talks about:

  • The aspects of being in a band that disenchanted him
  • The importance of communication amongst band members
  • His experience playing with Bob Dylan
  • His philosophy on practice and self-assessment
  • His teaching style
  • The projects he is working on now
