643 – Matt Starr: A Lifelong Learner

Starr is what I like to call a tinkerer. He’s someone who, although admittedly not a “gear guy”, likes to go down rabbit holes learning and discovering whatever it is he’s trying to understand better. From calling engineers who worked with a particular drummer to traveling frequently to study with Joe Morello and Jim Chapin, Matt is always looking for that extra unlock to take his playing and skills to the next level. This thirst for knowledge has served him well over the years, and particularly now in his studio where he’s able to get specific sounds out of his room by experimenting, researching and asking for feedback from his peers.

Nothing is a substitute for actually being in a room with somebody else who is an expert on what it is that you’re trying to do and having them school you.

Matt Star

Starr takes this same approach on the road with him, always looking for better ways to perform, stay present and deliver what the music needs. But make no mistake about it, the focus on improvement doesn’t get in the way of his playing. He’s a prime example of what Joe Morello taught him: “Learn in the shed then when you’re on stage, don’t think about it.”
