579 – Matt Cameron (Pearl Jam/Soundgarden): Stepping into the Arena

Matt Cameron has built a career that would be the envy of any drummer. He moved to from San Diego to Seattle and quickly got to work meeting other musicians and gigging around town, which eventually lead to him joining a young Soundgarden until they broke up in 1997. That didn’t stop him though, as he found a new gig with Pearl Jam in 1998, who he’s been with ever since.

Growing up a fan of the arena rock acts like Queen and Bowie, Cameron is proof that with hard work, genuine relationships and a love for the craft anything is possible.

Although Cameron’s most notably known for Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, he’s was also a member of Temple of the Dog (with fellow Soundgarden and Pearl Jam bandmates) and has served as the drummer for the side project bands Hater and Wellwater Conspiracy, also acting as the lead singer for the latter.

Matt Cameron talks about:

  • Growing up in San Diego and starting to gig as a teenager
  • The shows/performances he saw that changed his life
  • The state of the music industry and how touring has changed over his career
  • How things are going to change for bands post-COVID
  • His favorite Pearl Jam songs to play
  • Projects he’s working on now
