618 – Jost Nickel: Take Control of Your Career

Jost Nickel, who’s well known for his work for Jan Delay and Disko No. 1 over the past 15 years, isn’t one for sitting around waiting for the phone to ring. He’s created opportunities for himself in the form of three books over the past 6 years and his latest project, his first solo album, The Check In. Filled with original compositions, the record is chock full of Jost’s signature sound, that naturally expands and contracts, giving the music a refreshing feeling of aliveness. And make no mistake about it, that sound didn’t happen by accident.

Over the years, Jost put thousands of hours into developing his overall feel and phrasing on the kit until it was uniquely his and now shares that approach with his many students around the world and dives deep into his approach on this episode.

You just have to succeed one day more than you fail and it’s all good.

– Jost Nickel

Jost Nickel talks about:

  • Ways he determines phrasing, rhythm, and other elements of his playing
  • How to be a constructive critic of yourself
  • His writing process
  • How just starting the process can lead to creative inspiration
  • Not letting fear of failure stop you from doing things
  • Things he doesn’t want to regret when he’s older
