343 – Jeremiah Fraites (The Lumineers): Developing restraint as a drummer and songwriter

New Jersey native Jeremiah Fraites is the drummer for the wildly successful group, The Lumineers. But it wasn’t always that way for Fraites, who struggled as a musician in New York City. After struggling to make a career in music, Fraites and his bandmates decided to pack it up and move to Denver, Colorado. It was there where they began to develop a following, find accepting fans for their music and develop their craft as both songwriters and performers and eventually being nominated for a Grammy.

Jeremiah Fraites talks about:

  • Getting started playing music
  • Early music and drumming influences
  • Playing and crafting songs with minimal amounts of drums
  • Exploring “space” while playing
  • Why he left NYC
  • How they started to develop their audience
  • Growing the band:
    • Gaining management
    • Signing their record deal
    • Slowly developing an lager audience
  • Dealing with failures as an upcoming artist
  • “making it” in NYC
  • Fame and the pitfalls that come with it
  • Much more
