609 – Jay “J-Zone” Mumford: Age is Only a Number

Jay Mumford is the personification of the saying “it’s never too late.” Growing up as a son of music aficionados, Jay dove deep into the hip hop world, becoming a producer and beat maker. Growing frustrated with the music industry after he didn’t achieve commercial success, he almost walked away from It all but his love for music prevailed. Mumford decided to take up the drums in his 30s, and has built a respectable career in music in a short amount of time.

Focused on the music, Jay dedicated himself to his craft and has since established himself as a groove and breakbeat drummer, performing with his own bad, the Du-Rites, Danger Mouse and others.

If one thing is for certain, Jay is just getting started and he serves as a shining example of the fact that we can do anything we put our minds to.

J-Zone talks about:

  • Advantages that growing up listening to “old music” gave him
  • His biggest musical influences
  • How he transitioned from playing bass to producing to drums
  • Balancing practice and responsibility when he started to learn drums at 35
  • How sampling and sound recreation works
  • Lessons you have to learn on the road
  • What he thinks was easier by starting drums later in life
  • His methods for self-improvement
