574 – Jake Reed: Going For It

Jake Reed is about as well-rounded a player you can find. The Los Angeles drummer prides himself on being able to adapt to any situation and add his voice to the music. What I love most about Jake’s playing is that while he’s extremely well-studied from a scholastic standpoint, he plays in a way that’s spontaneous and never contrived. He’s studied the greats and uses them as a muse to discover his own uniqueness.

“Jake is my first choice for all playing and teaching recommendations.”

Peter Erskine

His playing has landed him in a variety of settings, including working with trioKAIT, Bill Holman, Johnny Mandel, Bill Cunliffe, Bruce Forman, Cow Bop, Seth MacFarlane, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Larry Goldings, Anthony Wilson, Bob Mintzer, Les McCann, Freda Payne, the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra, Andrew Synowiec, Mako, Ellis Hall, and Frenship.

He’s also a published author, bandleader, and his first record under his own name, Reed Between The Lines, can be found on iTunes, Spotify and anywhere else you get your music.

Jake Reed talks about:

  • Growing up in Kansas City, Missouri
  • What attracted him to the drums
  • The bands he grew up listening to
  • How he’s developed his own voice
  • The process of writing/recording his debut solo album
  • How he tries to make a greater impact with his teaching and playing
