664 – Gregory Artry, Jr: Allow and Accept

Gregory Artry, Jr. grew up in a home full of support and love for the craft with a father (also a professional drummer) who showed him the benefits of practice, discipline and musicality. Over the years, that discipline and dedication to the craft had Gregory demanding the best from himself, which was left unchecked and began to get in his way musically. That lead Gregory on a journey of self-discovery, acceptance and a focus on self care – a journey he continues on every day.

Over the years, that practice of acceptance worked its way into his playing, where he exudes equal amounts of control and conviction and freeness and spontaneity. By setting aside ego and allowing mistakes to come ago, Gregory says it’s freeing to know that he can recover quickly and keep the music moving forward. And when you think about it, that’s the only direction we can ever go in music and life…forward.

Gregory Artry, Jr talks about:

  • The importance of self care
  • Living with and learning from mistakes
  • The importance of mentors
  • Learning from his father – also a professional drummer
  • His approach to fixing problems in his playing
  • How he developed relationships with other musicians
  • Much more
