559 – Greg Errico: (Sly and the Family Stone) Pioneer of the San Francisco sound

If you’ve ever listened to the radio, you’ve heard Greg Errico’s playing. That’s a bold statement but it’s the truth. As the founding drummer of Sly and the Family Stone, Errico can be heard on all the hits, including You Can Make it if you Try and Everyday People until he left the band in 1971 to pursue other interests. Amazingly, those other interests including joining Weather Report, working with David Bowie, collaborating with The Grateful Dead, Santana and The Jerry Garcia Band not to mention producer credits that include Betty Davis, the famed soul singing wife of Miles Davis.

If there’s one thing that remains constant about Greg Errico is that he remains authentically himself and classic. And classic never goes out of style.

Greg Errico talks about:

  • Influences he listened to that led to developing his sound
  • Wanting to play drums since he was little
  • How music differs in various areas of the country
  • Being at Woodstock and what made it special
  • How life and music has changed for him since touring
