607 – Gene Lake: Find Your Own Truth

Gene Lake could very well be one of the most underrated drummers I’ve ever had on the podcast. An immensely talented drummer, Gene combines the technical prowess equivalent to our heroes, and the musicality to make sensible decisions to serve the music best. This ability has landed him gigs with Maxwell, Marcus Miller, Joe Zawinul Me’shell NdegeOcello and D’Angelo as well as the Screaming Headless Torsos and others. As the son of jazz saxophonist Oliver Lake, perhaps it was his father’s influence that shaped Gene’s playing style or maybe it was just the catalyst for Gene to go out and create his own, unique voice on his instrument.

Gene Lake talks about:

  • How he developed his sound and musicality
  • How the music industry and songwriting is changing
  • The ways he discovers new music
  • What he listened to growing up
  • His time at Berklee and the biggest lessons he learned there
  • How his approach to playing changes based on who he’s playing with
  • Ways he has gotten past gigs
  • Project he’s working on now
