468 – Bryan Carter: Developing a better sense of self

You’ve probably heard Bryan’s name and most likely have seen him floating around the internet. Like many, dare I say, younger drummers (he’s not so young anymore, closing in on 30) I can imagine most people look at him and think he was born with a gift and everything fell in his lap. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Growing up in church and being the son of a tough-loving, bandleader father Carter was being pushed every day by his father, the students his father’s class, and most importantly, himself.

Bryan understands what it means to be a professional and has committed to the hard work of mastery…all while battling inner-struggles about his personal life. A battle he’s overcome victoriously and stands as a voice and advocate for the LGBT community.

As if that wasn’t impressive enough, Bryan has recorded and toured with notable artists including Clark Terry, McCoy Tyner, Wynton Marsalis, Marcus Roberts, Kenny Barron, Michael Feinstein, and Kurt Elling. He also served as the house drummer for NBC’S “Maya & Marty” starring Maya Rudolph, Keenan Thompson, and Martin Short. The show has featured guests including Miley Cyrus, Nick Jonas, Tom Hanks, Drake, Steve Martin, and Tina Fey.

Catch Bryan on tour with his band, The Young Swangers or at one of his clinics and masterclasses that he performs all around the world.
