661 – Tyshawn Sorey: Deep Work

It’s hard to classify New Jersey native, Tysahwn Sorey. As a man who wears many hats well, depending on the day, he may be playing a multitude of instruments, conducting an orchestra, penning his next composition or leading a band though a musical journey that changes from night to night.

Tyshawn Sorey gravitated towards music at an early age, decided to make it his life’s work, spending the majority if his time listening, examining, digesting and creating music. This deep work compoounded over decades has put Tyshawn in a great position for not only artistic expression but the ability to make a career from his art, as well.

No matter what hat he’s wearing, Tyshawn approaches everything the same way. He honors the tradition of the music and is always looking to push the boundaries of what’s possible within the context of the music.

The more you listen the more whatever it is you’re listening to becomes more interesting, even from music you don’t like.
