408 – Charles Ruggiero: Creating his own legacy

Charles Ruggiero, son of legendary drummer Vinnie Ruggiero, has made quite the name for himself in his own right. Not one to live in the shadow of his father, Charles has developed his own unique style and voice behind the kit. Since “turning pro” in 1994 Charles has worked with a who’s who list of Jazz and Rock luminaries too numerous to mention Oh, and get this: His first big gig was with Chuck Mangione’s group, touring with the jazz superstar for the next 4 years.  The first months of his time with Mangione provided him with the chance of a lifetime – learning the ropes, playing alongside the legendary drummer Steve Gadd.

Charles Ruggiero talks about:

  • How . he got into drumming as a kid
  • Growing up the son of Vinnie Ruggiero (Chuck Mangione’s drummer)
  • Creating his own sound and identity beyond his father’s legacy
  • The importance of playing along to records
  • How to add meaning and depth to your playing
  • How the greatest drummers sound huge by playing light
  • The best compliment he ever got on his drumming
  • “Accidents” in music and how they connect performers with their audiences
  • Why today’s young musicians tend to be more “perfectionist” than older musicians
  • Much more
