103 – Play the drums, don’t let them play you: with Aaron Comess

I n this podcast I talk to Aaron Comess, who is best known for his work as founding (and current) member of the multi-platinum group The Spin Doctors. Although you’ve heard his grooves behind their hits like “Two Princes” and “Little Miss Can’t be Wrong” what you may not have heard is his massively impressive jazz chops which he has been honing since he started playing drums at the age of nine. Aaron talks about not only the Spin Doctors but also his long-time tenure in New York City including playing with a who’s who list of musicians.

“The reward of the hustle is not what you get, but who you become.” (Tweet this)

In this session you’ll hear Aaron Comess talk about:

  • How he got started playing drums
  • The importance of having a great teacher
  • How he applies rudiments / technique to the kit
  • Playing musically and making sure that everything “swings”
  • His time at The New School
  • Starting The Spin Doctors
  • Much much more
